Limitations and compatibility
- Every letter A-Z and digit 0-9 is supported in serif-bold and sans-bold; bold-italic and italic variants have no dedicated Unicode digits, so digits stay in plain text for those two.
- This is not the same as your app's native Bold button: native bold is a formatting instruction the app controls, and it usually disappears when pasted into a different app. These are literal characters, so they display the same everywhere that supports the Unicode block — and unlike native bold, they can't be toggled back off by the destination app.
- Accented letters (José, Müller) and non-Latin scripts are preserved exactly as typed rather than forced into the bold set, because Unicode doesn't define a bold-math version of every accented letter.
Questions
Will bold Unicode text work in WhatsApp?
WhatsApp has its own native bold formatting (wrap text in asterisks) that most people should use for messages. Unicode bold text still displays in WhatsApp since it's just characters, but it doesn't gain WhatsApp's native emphasis semantics. See our WhatsApp formatting guide for the tradeoffs.
Why does bold text look like boxes on my phone?
That means the current font doesn't include glyphs for this Unicode block. It's uncommon on modern iOS/Android but happens on some older devices or minimal fonts — see our troubleshooting guide.
Serif or sans-serif — which bold should I pick?
Both cover the same letters and digits with the same limitations; it's purely a look preference. Serif bold has traditional letterform details; sans-serif bold is cleaner and more geometric.
